Last weekend we went to a mochi making festival on Microsoft campus! We got to see how mochi is traditionally made and we got to taste some fresh mochi! First the sticky rice is cooked in square wooden containers. After it is cooked it’s placed in a large “bowl” made out of stone. Wooden mallets are used to smash the rice until it forms a paste. They keep the mallets wet so the paste doesn’t stick too much to the mallets. After a lot of beatings and mashing the mochi is ready to go! The mochi is then portioned out and rolled into a ball and filling is put into it. It was a lot of fun!
